99X Memories: 20+ year sales vet remembers 99X/Kiss-FM

Former WXLO 99X / WRKS Kiss-FM sales guy Mark Nieman emailed us to give a unique insight to working at the legendary 99X and Kiss-FM:

I had just moved to New York in 1975 from Toledo Ohio. I married my best friend and college sweetheart Robin who was from Queens and she insisted that we move and settle in New York City. With some limited experience in radio sales from Ohio I was determined to find a sales job with a major New York radio station. It wasn’t so easy. I got thrown out of every station in the city with the same line “come back when you have some “Major Market” radio experience”. It was a hot July day in 1975, and feeling completely rejected I walked in to 1440 Broadway, went up to second floor reception desk at 99x WXLO. I demanded to see the sales manager and after wearing down the receptionist I was sent back to his office to speak with him. I pitched this man with everything in me promising him that I would bring in a ton of commercial business for the radio station. I WAS HIRED THE NEXT DAY!

As the old saying goes, “the rest is history” ! I was a salesman at 99x and I stayed at 1440 Broadway for 20 YEARS ! I recently found the 99x New York.com web site and I have been listening and absolutely loving it all day. As I listen to the air checks from all of the great jocks from those days I am flooded with wonderful memories of both the friendships I had with all of these guys, to the incredible music (that ONLY 99x broke in the market) and yes even the commercials–which I remember selling most of them.

Working at 99x WXLO was without question some of the happiest years of my radio career. We were a tight family and every staff member contributed to the ratings win that we always had. I remember when selling the station to a potential client and proudly telling them “We are only second in New York City to WABC. What a powerful statement that was !

Great programming, professional “pumped up jocks, incredible unique promotions, huge community involvement, and overall solid management made 99x WXLO one the greatest radio stations in the country. I am so proud that I was a part of that history.
