Tony Taylor on WOR-FM: The Bill Drake sound from 1969

Tony Taylor now, on WOR-FM from the Drake days.

After the success of RKO General O&O stations KHJ, CKLW and WRKO, the format was imported to New York City on the first FM outlet in the RKO Chain. In this, the first Top 40 incarnation of 98.7 FM, the standard Drake formatics are in place, as are the Johnny Mann jingles.

This would last for two more years before the Drake sound would run it’s eventual course, but the stage was set for future success with the “Q” format as WXLO 99X would emerge by 1972. Here is the genesis of that transformation…
